The area is inhabited by Kazakh and Tuvan hunters whose ways of life have not changed since times unmemorable. The Kazakhs have ancient traditions of falconry. They employ Golden Eagles which are kept for hunting foxes, hares and other small animals.

After having breakfast, we will load our luggages to the car and drive to Khoton and Khurgan twin lake located at 2073m. Our campsite at Khoton lake is idyllic and is fed by over ten rivers from glaciers and nearby lakes. In places, Khoton lake is up to 50 metres deep although the average is 29 Meters. Khoton lake has only one island although it does have a strangely inviting beach on its southern shore.

The area has  one of the largest petroglyph galleries in Mongolia. They date back to Neolithic period and the Bronze Age and depict numerous hunting scenes, and representations of wild and domestic animals. Also there are some distinctly well preserved ancient burial sites. This evening you may go swimming, explore the surroundings or laze in the camp.

The neighbor Khurgan Lake is surrounded by glacial moraines. The lake is 23 km long, and 6 km wide with a total shoreline of  71 km.  Lake Khurgan has many small islands. These islands are formed from Moraines. Some of these islands are up to 30 metres high.

After breakfast, head towards Sagsai soum where we will meet lcoal  Kazakhs who are culturally and ethnically different from Mongolians with language and religion as the two primary cultural markers.  The Kazakh language belongs to Turkic family of languages, and is the dominant language in Bayan-Ulgii. The Kazakh population is predominantly Muslim. Although the majority consider themselves Muslim, a small but growing proportion practice basic Muslim tenets of Namaz and fasting during Ramadan.

We will enjoy our time with Kazakh nomads today. Mongolian Kazakhs are traditionally semi-nomadic pastoralists, herding sheep, goats, yaks, camels and horses.  The nomadic economy is strongly influenced by traditional gender roles – men herd, women cook, care for children and prepare textiles.  It is your chance to learn about their way of living and unique culture.

The another highlight of the tour- Eagle hunting is going to take place today.  Our kazakh friends gather to present their tradition of eagle hunting.

Kazakh hunters take a lethal bird of prey from its mother, nurse it until it has a wingspan larger than most humans, and then train it to attack fast-moving prey from the air and hand it over to them, their masters. This tradition reaching back thousands of years on the Eurasian steppe. Nowadays it is still practiced in Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and in Xinjiang province, China.

In 2011 UNESCO added Kazakh eagle hunting to the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, as an example of living human heritage.  Stay with local family.
